Virtopsy robot, the Virtobot at the Institute for Forensic medicine, Zurich, Switzerland. A modified industrial robot makes comprehensive digital imagery of a body using a mounted Nikon D800 camera, and a 3D scanner using blue light; also mounted is a module containing a CT guided biopsy needle. Combined with a full CT scan and postmortem angiography this technology can act as a triage system for conventional autopsies rendering many of them unnecessary.
Here the blue light of the scanner illuminates a mannequin corpse substitute to provide a detailed 3 D surface scan which can be used in crime scene reconstruction and a permanent record of the exterior of the corpse.
